Hello, little one. Are you snuggled up in bed? Pull your blanket up to your chin. Let us take one slow, sleepy breath together. In... and out.

**

Long, long ago, in a beautiful kingdom, there lived a little boy named **Dhruva**. He was about as old as you. He lived with his gentle mother, **Suniti**, and his father was the king.

Dhruva loved his father very much.

One day, he saw his father sitting on the throne. Dhruva ran to him, with his arms wide open. He wanted to climb up and sit on his father's lap.

But that day, he could not.

Dhruva felt sad. A big, heavy kind of sad, right in the middle of his chest. He walked slowly back to his mother, and he put his head on her shoulder.

**

Suniti stroked his hair. "My dear one," she said softly, "when we feel sad, we can think of Lord Vishnu. He loves every child, always, and he has room for everyone."

Dhruva lifted his head. "Then I will go and think of him," he said, "until I feel him close."

His mother kissed his forehead and gave him her blessing.

**

So Dhruva walked to a quiet forest at the edge of the kingdom. The trees were tall, and the birds were singing softly. Little rabbits peeped out from the grass, and a deer looked up and blinked at him in a friendly way.

On the path he met a kind sage with a gentle smile. It was **Narada**, who travels everywhere, singing.

"Where are you going, little one?" Narada asked.

"I want to be close to Lord Vishnu," said Dhruva.

Narada smiled. He sat down with Dhruva under a tree. He showed him how to sit very still, how to breathe slowly, and how to think of Vishnu with love, again and again, the way you hold a happy thought.

"Be patient," Narada said. "Patience is like a little seed. It grows quietly."

**

So Dhruva sat. Day after day, he sat very still and thought of Vishnu with love. The sun came up, and went down. The moon came up, and went down. And Dhruva kept his heart steady, steady, steady. Sometimes he wanted to get up and run and play. But he remembered the little seed, and he stayed.

The Puranas tell that at last Lord Vishnu came to him. Dhruva opened his eyes, and his heart filled with joy. He did not feel left out any more. He felt loved, all the way through.

**

And Vishnu was so pleased with Dhruva's patience that he gave him a very special place, high up in the night sky.

Tradition says that Dhruva became a star. Not a twinkly star that moves across the sky, but the steady one, the star that always stays in the same place. People call it **Dhruva Tara**, the pole star. For hundreds and hundreds of years, travellers have looked up at it to find their way home.

**

Maybe tonight, if the sky is clear, someone can show you which star it is. And if not, that is all right. You can think of it shining there, quietly, all night long.

**

Is there something you are waiting for, little one, that you can wait for gently, like Dhruva?

You don't have to answer. Just think about it as you close your eyes.

Goodnight. Sleep softly. The steady star is keeping watch over the sky.
