Namaste, and welcome to the fifth night of Navratri. Five evenings now. You have kept coming back, and that is its own kind of devotion. Sit comfortably. One breath, in, and out.

Last night, the gods gave the Devi their gifts. A conch from Varuna. A bell from Indra. A rosary and a water-pot from Brahma ji. Jewels and garments and an unfading lotus garland from the ocean. And from Himavat, king of the mountains, a lion to carry her. Then she laughed, and the worlds shook, and Mahishasura heard it. He came with a host too large to count. She met them, calm as a lamp in a still room. One by one his chiefs were overcome. And at the very end, Mahishasura himself came forward, as a huge buffalo.

Tonight, he meets her.

**

Mahishasura was enormous in his buffalo form. The sage tells us that when he moved, the earth shook. The oceans spilled over their shores. With his horns he tossed whole mountains. Clouds were scattered by his breath.

He was trying to frighten her. He was trying to make her doubt herself, the way a storm tries to make a small lamp go out.

The Devi watched him. She was not frightened. She was steady. And she moved to hold him, to bind him where he stood.

**

So he changed.

He let go of the buffalo shape, and in its place stood a **lion**, huge and roaring.

The Devi met the lion.

So he changed again. Now he was a **man**, tall and strong and proud.

The Devi met the man.

So he changed again. Now he was a vast **elephant**, trumpeting, pulling at her lion with his trunk.

The Devi met the elephant.

And then he became the buffalo once more, shaking the three worlds.

**

Do you see what is happening? He keeps changing. Each time, he hopes that this new shape will be the one that works. Bigger. Louder. Different. But it does not matter what shape he takes. Because she does not change at all.

She is the same Devi, made of the light of all the gods. The same calm. The same courage. Whatever comes in front of her, she meets it as she is.

**

The sage says that, at last, she paused, and spoke to him. She told him he could roar for a little while longer, because soon, in this very place, the gods themselves would be roaring, with joy.

Then she rose, and the Devi overcame him.

**

And it was over.

A great silence fell, and then a great sound of happiness. The gods cried out in joy. The sages gave thanks. The gandharvas sang, and the apsaras danced. The world, which had been shaking for so long, became still.

**

Then **Indra**, and all the gods with him, bowed before the Devi. Their hearts were so full that their bodies seemed to tremble with it. And they began to praise her.

We will not recite their hymn. It is sung in many homes, and it belongs to them. But here, in our own words, is what they said.

They said that she is the one who fills the whole world with her power. That she is the strength of all the gods, gathered into one form. That even Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma cannot fully describe her.

They said that she is found everywhere, in many shapes. In the homes of good people, she is good fortune. In the minds of the learned, she is understanding. In the hearts of the good, she is faith. In gentle people, she is modesty.

They said that whoever remembers her when afraid, she takes away their fear. And whoever remembers her when they are at peace, she gives them a still clearer mind.

They said that even when she looks fierce, her heart is full of compassion. That even her victory over those who did wrong is a kind of kindness, because it frees them too.

And they asked her to protect them. From the front, from behind, from every side. In the east, the west, the north, the south. Protect us, they said, and protect the world.

**

The Devi was pleased with their praise. She said, "Ask me for whatever you wish."

The gods said, "You have already done everything. Our enemy has been overcome. But this is our wish. Whenever we remember you in our trouble, please come, and take our troubles away."

And the Devi said that it would be so. Then, as the gods watched, she vanished from their sight.

**

"This," said the sage Medhas to the king and the merchant, "is how the Devi appeared from the bodies of the gods, for the good of the three worlds. Now listen. She appeared again, in another form."

**

And that is where we stop tonight. Mahishasura kept changing his shape. Bigger, louder, different. The Devi did not change at all. Her courage was not a mask she put on. It was simply who she was.

Tomorrow, on the sixth night, the story turns. Two new and powerful brothers rise in the heavens, and the gods go to the Himalaya to call on her again.

But keep tonight's question with you. When troubles keep changing their shape in your life, what in you can stay the same? And who do you remember, when you need courage?
