Hello, little friend. Are you sitting comfortably? Let us go to a forest, far away and long ago.

**

In this forest lived a mother named **Anjana**. And with her lived her little one, **Hanuman**. Many families say he was the son of the wind, too, so he loved the breeze very much.

Little Hanuman had bright, shining eyes. He had a long tail that curled up at the end. And he had so much energy. He could not sit still for even one minute.

Every morning, as soon as the sun came up, he opened his eyes and said, "Maa! Maa! Can I go and play?"

And Anjana would laugh and say, "Yes, my little one. But stay where I can see you."

**

Hanuman ran to the big banyan tree. He swung from one branch to another. Whoosh! Then he hopped down onto the soft grass.

He looked up at the sky. "Maa," he called, "why do the clouds float? Are they made of cotton?"

Anjana sat down beside him. "They are made of tiny drops of water," she said, "so light that the wind can carry them."

"The wind!" said Hanuman. "I love the wind."

Then he looked down. A line of little ants was marching across a stone. "Maa, where are they going?"

"Home," said Anjana. "They are carrying food for their families."

Hanuman lay down on his tummy and watched them. He was very careful not to step on even one. "Hello, ants," he whispered. "Have a good journey home." The ants did not answer, of course. But Hanuman was sure they were happy.

**

Then he heard a tiny sound. Cheep. Cheep.

Under a bush sat a baby bird. It had hopped out of its nest and could not fly back up. It looked up at the branch where its mother was waiting.

Hanuman did not grab it. He did not shout. He knelt down very, very slowly.

"Don't worry, little one," he whispered. "I will help you."

He cupped the baby bird in his two soft hands. He climbed the tree, gently, gently, and put it back in its nest. The mother bird sang a happy song, and the baby bird snuggled under her soft wing. Hanuman sat on the branch for a moment, just smiling.

**

On the way down, Hanuman met a squirrel holding an empty shell. It looked hungry. Hanuman had a sweet fruit in his hand. He broke it in two, and gave the squirrel the bigger half.

When he ran back to his mother, Anjana hugged him tight.

"You are very strong, my little one," she said. "But do you know what makes me happiest? You are kind."

**

What would you have done if you had found that baby bird?
